First Mountmaking Workshop a Success!

It’s three in the morning and I’m still buzzing from the amazing creativity and energy that filled our first mountmaking workshop! Over the last two days, seven people from as far away as the East Coast absorbed a lot of information and then put it into practice building beautiful brass mounts. From object assessment, measuring, and templating, they moved onto cutting, bending, and silver brazing pieces of brass stock into some very sophisticated mounts that would be suitable for display in most museums. Underlying all of this was an strong ethic of conservation of the objects, and an artistic sense to bring out their best presentation. I was bowled over by how focused everyone was and how they took the techniques we showed them and made them their own. My hat is off to Sarah, Lynn, Alex, Pat, Joe, Nico, and Daniel!

Mountmaking Focus Studio showed itself up to the task of hosting this group. The great space we have in an old wooden warehouse has proven to be a wonderful mountmaking shop, and now a viable instructional facility. We’re planning more workshops for the future with thoughts of sessions devoted to mounts of acrylic and other plastics, textile mounts, mannequins, and deeper study into mount design and engineering. We’d love to know what you are looking for as we want to bring this to a wider audience. With that in mind, we can also offering trainings at your museum; a great way to bring a crew together in preparation for a big exhibit project. Please get in touch. We’d appreciate your thoughts.

I also have to say what a pleasure it was working with Chris Moore, my partner in instruction for the workshop. Her great ease and rapport with the participants, combined with a fine sense of mountmaking made it all feel so easy. I look forward to being a team for many workshops to come.

Hi Libby, We’re just in the process of finalizing dates, costs, and specific subjects of coming workshops. We’re hoping to be teaching one a month and will be offering classes such as Fundamentals of Mountmaking; Plex, Plastics, and Alternate Materials; Basic Seismic Mitigation; Textile Mounts; and Mannequin fabrication. We should be posting specifics soon. Thanks!

    Hi,
I’m very much interested in mount making for textiles and costumes. I have been working with textiles in a museum context for 10 years but I’m constantly looking to further my education and keep abreast of constant innovation. Workshops offered in the context of conferences are usually too brief to go into anything in depth. Please keep me informed if you’re offering any workshops in this particular field.
    Thanks!

      Hi Sarah,
A textile workshop is in the planning stages, but it probably won’t be until later in the year as we’re trying not to over-extend ourselves. I’ll let you know when we get closer to a date. In the mean time, I’d appreciate it if you’d let us know some specifics of what sort of objects you’re working with and special areas that interest you. One of the hard parts of planning a workshop is trying to focus the content as there are always more things to teach than time to do it well.

      Thanks!
      Jamie
