I hope there will be another opportunity for this format after things stabilize again. If this interests you\, please get in touch and I’ll keep you posted on future workshops. \n———————————————————– \nAt the request of experienced mountmakers\, we are offering a workshop in advanced problems in mountmaking. This four-day workshop will focus on working with difficult objects and situations while maintaining conservation standards. We will discuss the development and design of mount systems to facilitate installation and deinstallation. The use of machine tools such as the vertical milling machine and metal lathe will be introduced as well as the more common tools of the mountmaking shop. \nThis workshop is being limited to four participants instead of the usual six so that there can be more individual attention given to each member of the class. As such\, I am asking each applicant to contact me with a short description of their mountmaking and shop experience and skills\, as well as what they wish to focus on in terms of advanced skills and mountmaking issues. Inclusion in the class will be determined by how each participant fits with the group so that workshop focus can maintained for optimum instructional quality. This is the first time this class is being offered so curriculum and methods taught will be developed to best fit the group. I ask that application be made by the end of October\, and notification of inclusion in the class will be given in early November. \nThe cost for this workshop will be $1000 plus a $100 materials fee. Payment will be due after notification. \n \n  \n  \n  URL:https://mountmakingfocus.com/event/advanced-mountmaking-workshop/ LOCATION:Mountmaking Focus Studio\, 3511 Interlake Ave N\, Seattle\, WA\, 98103\, United States CATEGORIES:Mountmaking Workshop,Preventive Conservation,Training Workshop ORGANIZER;CN="Jamie Hascall":MAILTO:jamie@mountmakingfocus.com END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20181204T083000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20181207T163000 DTSTAMP:20240427T153737 CREATED:20181004T025741Z LAST-MODIFIED:20181004T025741Z UID:519-1543912200-1544200200@mountmakingfocus.com SUMMARY:Mountmaking Workshop: December 4th-7th\, 2018 DESCRIPTION:This four-day workshop explores the how and why of museum exhibit mountmaking with an emphasis on object safety and preventive conservation. This object centered approach will teach methods for analyzing objects for their condition and balance\, making templates for accurate mount fabrication\, and the construction of mounts in brass and other metals. Engineering concepts and their application to mountmaking and hands-on practice in metal forming\, silver brazing\, and mechanical fastenings will be integral to the workshop. \n\nAs the workshop progresses\, we will focus on working with plastics and other alternative materials for mountmaking. We may also work with mounts for textiles or other specialized object types\, as well as discussing basic principles of seismic stabilization. The direction of this part of the workshop is somewhat determined by the interests of the participants. In the spirit of a true workshop\, the collaboration of all participants with each other and as a group of dedicated professionals will be encouraged. Acrylic plastic\, foams\, felts\, and more! May 1st-3rd 2018 DESCRIPTION:I’ve received requests for a mountmaking workshop that would address the use of “soft” materials and techniques accessible to those without a dedicated shop facility. Up to now\, our workshops have emphasized brass mount fabrication with the cutting\, forming\, and joining with silver brazing\, and the use of a shop with basic stationary power tools. Many small institutions have neither the facilities or the need for this style of mountmaking\, so I am now offering a three day workshop that will focus on techniques and materials more suited to non-shop situations. \n  \nPlexiglass Book mount \nPattern for Plexiglass Book Mount \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe workshop will emphasize conservation-based mountmaking with plastics\, foams\, textiles\, and other board products. Some work with metals will also be included\, but they will be used in ways that can be worked with hand tools\, and will focus on using their characteristics of strength and stiffness to enhance the structure of some of the other materials. We will also explore the appropriate use of magnets and other fun materials such as Fosshape and epoxy putty. \nSince the lead time on this workshop is a little short\, and it is the shakedown voyage of a new curriculum\, I’m offering this class at a 20% discount off of the usual workshop fee. The tuition will be $480.00 plus a $35.00 materials fee. \n  \nNW Coast Hat Mounts \nAleut Kayak Hunting Hat \nHat Mount Materials \nTextile Mount Using Rare-earth Magnets URL:https://mountmakingfocus.com/event/mountmaking-soft-materials-acrylic-plastic-foams-felts-may-1st-3rd-2018/ LOCATION:Mountmaking Focus Studio\, 3511 Interlake Ave N\, Seattle\, WA\, 98103\, United States CATEGORIES:Mountmaking Workshop,Preventive Conservation,Training Workshop ORGANIZER;CN="Jamie Hascall":MAILTO:jamie@mountmakingfocus.com END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20180313T083000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20180316T170000 DTSTAMP:20240427T153737 CREATED:20180207T211644Z LAST-MODIFIED:20180221T161212Z UID:359-1520929800-1521219600@mountmakingfocus.com SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Mountmaking Workshop: March 13th-16th 2018 DESCRIPTION:This four-day workshop explores the how and why of museum exhibit mountmaking with an emphasis on object safety and preventive conservation.
