Mountmaking for Exhibits: August 23rd-27th, 2021
August 23, 2021 @ 8:30 am - August 27, 2021 @ 4:30 pm
$1950.00This will be the first in our post-pandemic series of mountmaking workshops. The past year has given many of us a taste of a world that is a little less crowded and moving a little slower. With that in mind, we’re limiting the class size to three participants to give more space in the workshop, and to provide more individualized attention then there was in the previous six-person classes. In the interest of safety while working together, fully matured COVID vaccination is required for attendance.
This five-day workshop will present the theoretical concepts and practical techniques of mountmaking for museum objects, set within a framework of an exhibit display. For each of these workshops, we tailor the “exhibit” to the collections interests of the participants to give persons from diverse museum types the opportunity to work with appropriate objects and materials. Participants are encouraged to bring an objects from their own collection to help them work with objects that match their skill level. Through this format, the intention is to present the practical problems of mounting objects for safe installation and aesthetic display while maintaining appropriate levels of care and conservation.
The workshop will explore the how and why of museum exhibit mountmaking with an emphasis on object safety and preventive conservation. This object centered approach will teach methods for analyzing objects for their condition and balance, making templates for accurate mount fabrication, and the construction of mounts in brass and steel, plastics, and other materials. Engineering concepts and their application to mountmaking and hands-on practice in metal forming, silver brazing, mechanical fastenings, and other fabrication techniques will be integral to the workshop.
