I’ve received requests for a mountmaking workshop that would address the use of “soft” materials and techniques accessible to those without a dedicated shop facility. Up to now, our workshops have emphasized brass mount fabrication with the cutting, forming, and joining with silver brazing, and the use of a shop with basic stationary power tools. Many small institutions have neither the facilities or the need for this style of mountmaking, so I am now offering a three day workshop that will focus on techniques and materials more suited to non-shop situations.
The workshop will emphasize conservation-based mountmaking with plastics, foams, textiles, and other board products. Some work with metals will also be included, but they will be used in ways that can be worked with hand tools, and will focus on using their characteristics of strength and stiffness to enhance the structure of some of the other materials. We will also explore the appropriate use of magnets and other fun materials such as Fosshape and epoxy putty.
Since the lead time on this workshop is a little short, and it is the shakedown voyage of a new curriculum, I’m offering this class at a 20% discount off of the usual workshop fee. The tuition will be $480.00 plus a $35.00 materials fee.
