Mountmaking Focus Studio 3511 Interlake Ave N, Seattle, WA, United StatesThis four-day workshop explores the how and why of museum exhibit mountmaking with an emphasis on object safety and preventive conservation. This object centered approach will teach methods for analyzing objects for their condition and balance, making templates for accurate mount fabrication, and the construction of mounts in brass and other metals. Engineering concepts and their application to mountmaking and hands-on practice in metal forming, silver brazing, and mechanical fastenings will be integral to the workshop. As the workshop progresses, we will focus on working with plastics and other alternative materials for mountmaking. We may also work with mounts for textiles

For each of these workshops, we will be trying to tailor the "exhibit" to the collections interests of the participants. This also gives the opportunity for more or less experienced people to work with objects that match their skill level. This five-day workshop will present the theoretical concepts and practical techniques of mountmaking for museum objects, set within a framework of an actual exhibit display. The past year has given many of us a taste of a world that is a little less crowded and moving a little slower. With that in mind, we’re limiting the class size to three participants to give more space in the workshop, and to provide more individualized attention then there was in the previous six-person classes.
